Daisy, an amazing story of recovery from multiple hip fractures.
Before visiting the Specialist
Beautiful lurcher Daisy was hit by a car after escaping her back garden in Guernsey. As well as some cuts and bruises, it was clear that she had suffered some serious injuries to her back end. Daisy’s primary vet gave her some pain relief and stabilised her condition before taking some x-rays. These showed that she had broken her hip, and it was decided that referral to an orthopaedic specialist was the best course of action.
Daisy’s Care
Daisy was taken to Hamilton Specialist Referrals where a CT scan was performed to confirm exactly where the fractures were. Michael Hamilton, a specialist orthopaedic surgeon, operated on Daisy, fixing her hip using a special technique called an external skeletal fixation or ‘ESF’. These can look a little scary, but they are really effective at keeping broken bones stable whilst they heal. A specialist anaesthetist made sure that Daisy’s pain was well managed throughout her surgery and recovery, and with the help of intense and skilled nursing care and physiotherapy, Daisy was able to go home just over a week after surgery!
Daisy’s owners were given instructions by her surgeon and a physiotherapist on how to care for her; she would need strict rest for at least six weeks and some special physical therapy. Due to the distance between Daisy’s home and the specialist hospital, her recovery was also supported by her primary vet.
Daisy’s Progress
At her re-check appointment one month later, Daisy was walking well on both of her back legs. X-rays showed that her broken pelvis was healing well, so the fixator was removed.
Daisy has continued to make a great recovery, being able to enjoy the beach with her family only a few months after surgery.
