Clinical Profile

I graduated and spent some time in mixed, and then small animal practice before doing an internship at the Royal Veterinary College, followed by a PhD at Cambridge University. I spent three years in a surgical training programme after which I became a European Diplomate in Surgery and passed the RCVS Diploma in Small Animal Soft Tissue Surgery and am a RCVS Recognised Specialist in Small Animal Surgery (Soft Tissue). I have been actively engaged with the Specialist community, and am invited to speak at international and national meetings, I give continuing education talks to veterinary practitioners and regularly provide advice to practitioners on clinical cases. I have examined both vets and nurses at undergraduate and post graduate Specialist level and have been the President of the Association of Veterinary Soft Tissue Surgery, President of the European College of Veterinary Surgery and am a founder member of the British College of Veterinary Specialists. I worked at Cambridge University until 2004 after which I moved to Hampshire and set up a multi disciplinary referral hospital, which opened in 2006 and has grown to be one of the largest referral centres in the area. I believe strongly in a commitment of the Specialist community to support the practitioner and enable owners to make informed decisions regarding the health and welfare of their pets, choosing state of the art treatments, or no treatment if that is what they want. I believe in Specialists working together to achieve these aims without prejudice or competition to provide the best advice and treatment possible for owners and their pets.

Since leaving the University of Cambridge I have concentrated on publishing clinical case material and continuing education articles for veterinary practitioners. I have also contributed book chapters for reference texts for general practitioners, veterinary nurses and Surgical Specialists. My PhD was on cultured epithelial skin grafting for treatment of burns and my research interests centred around epithelial stem cells and survival of stem cells in skin grafts.
